When Does a Business Need a Spill Kit?

A spill kit is a prerequisite for businesses where there is risk of pollution on site. In order to clean any spillages quickly, safely and efficiently, these spill kits need to contain all required cleaning materials to minimise the exposure to any hazardous materials or pollutants. But when does a business require one, and what else needs to be known about them?

When Does a Business Need a Spill Kit?

What kind of spill kit is required?

There are a few different types of spill kits available that are suitable for certain types of spillages:

General purpose – This type of kit is designed for water-based liquids and hydrocarbons alike. These kits use grey absorbents to make for the most effective way of cleaning up the aforementioned spillages.

Oil-Only – Using white absorbents, the oil-only kit is designed to clean up oil and gasoline, and other hydrocarbons. These absorbents float on water, making for a more effective clean of hydrocarbons.

Hazmat – As the name suggests, this kit is designed only for use on hazardous materials, such as corrosive acids and solvents. These kits use yellow absorbents.

The kind of spill kit you require depends on the types of materials that are regularly handled in your workplace. For some environments, more than one type of spill kit may be required. Some oil spill kits may be labelled as ‘suitable for mild chemicals’, but this does not make them a suitable alternative. Instead, make sure you opt for the kit specifically designed for the particular materials present in your premises.

Things to consider

Aside from the type of spill kit that you need, you must also think about how many you require. It’s better to have too many than too few, and being able to cope with multiple spills is very important. The size of the kits you purchase is important, too – consider the fact that a spillage may involve the entirety of a large tank, for instance – you need to be able to clear it up safely and quickly.

Spill kit guidelines

As well as having the correct spill kits, those who may be required to use them must be taught how to do so properly and safely. Spill response training should be carried out amongst all staff who need it – this includes the protocols for reporting any spillages to avoid repeat incidents, and instructions on how to replenish the spill kits once used.

Spill kit checks are also very important –  making sure that kits are full and in good working order, and making sure they are located in easy-to-reach areas, to maximise efficiency in the event of a spillage.

If your business operates with potential pollutants, hazardous materials or materials that could cause harm or damage when spilled, then spill kits are a necessity. Ensure that you have the right kit, the right amount of kits, and that those who need to use them know how to do so correctly.
