The best service stations in the UK

Whether you’re a seasoned HGV driver or a first-time road tripper, having a good idea of some of the best service stations in the country will ensure that your rests are always the best.

Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of what we think are the UK’s finest motorway recharge spots, so you can get your trip planned out ahead of time!

the best service stations in the UK

Gloucester Services (M5)

If your journey takes you along the M5, then it’s your lucky day. Why? Because you can stop at Gloucester Services! Located between junction 11a and 12 of the M5, it’s the perfect countryside spot to take your mind off the road ahead.

While you might not be too fussed about what a service station is like architecturally, Gloucester Services has actually won awards for its natural, swooping design that blends seamlessly into the landscape behind it. It’s also got a little pond outside teeming with wildlife for you to enjoy whilst you eat your food.

Speaking of the food, Gloucester doesn’t slack in this area either. Open from 7am-9pm, the kitchen serves a range of different soups, hot meals and salad, plus there’s a farm shop and deli counter that services sandwiches, chips, sausage rolls – you name it. And you’ll be pleased to know that all of the produce is sourced from local farms.

Tebay Services (M6)

So what could compete with Gloucester Services? Well, perhaps the sister company, Tebay Services in Cumbria!

Just like you will find in Gloucester, there’s a farm shop, a café and a deli counter, all of which serve locally sourced, delicious food. And again, just like Gloucester, Tebay offers some seriously breathtaking views for a service station (and you’d hope so too, given that it’s slap bang in the middle of the Lake District).

Rivington Services (M61)

OK so the bar has been set pretty high, but the remaining service stations are still worthy contenders. Take Rivington Services in Bolton, for example. Once considered one of Britain’s worst service stations (which is a serious accusation), Rivington is now up there with the very best thanks to a £12.3 million investment. You’ll find premium brands like Starbucks Subway and Burger King, and a wide range of other well-kept facilities and amenities. The grounds are particularly well maintained too.

Gretna Services (A74M)

As one of the highest-rated service stations in the UK, Gretna Services is a safe bet if you’re travelling to or from Scotland. Located between junction 21 and 22, Gretna has a lot to like, including a wide range of different eateries, EV charging points, a Canny Scot Shop and, of course, a Yorkshire Tea dispenser.

Cobham Services (M25)

One of the best service stations in the country, and certainly the best on the M25, is Cobham. Found between the M23 and M3 junctions, Cobham cost a whopping £75 million to build, and you can tell by just looking at it. There’s a huge range of fast food offerings and retail stores to consider, and there’s even a beautiful water fountain at the entrance (which admittedly isn’t on the top of my service station priority list, but it’s nice to have.)
